Abstract:  Wyandotte County Rivers. A polygon surface water feature dataset of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers in Wyandotte County. In ESRI GIS format in Kansas North State Plane NAD83, units feet, suitable for use at 1:1200 map scale or smaller. This dataset portrays river channel banks as visible in and interpreted from aerial photography.

Purpose: To serve as a thematic hydrology reference layer in support of Unified Government's Enterprise GIS (E-GIS) system. It is used to display rivers cartographically in GIS applications.

Description: River shorelines (water edge) were updated using heads-up digitizing with ortho aerial photos as reference backdrop.

Description: Original rivers GIS dataset was maintained by Base Mapping Program in Arc/Info-- original source of data is unknown. This dataset, modified over the years, was foundation for this, the most current updated rivers layer.

Description: Schema was revised by dropping legacy fields RIV_83_ and RIV_83_ID, and adding Water_Type, Comment, DateMod, and DateAdded fields. The value "Island" was added to Name field domain to account for land features in rivers (two islands in KS river were digitized). Water_Type field was added to accomodate Esri Local Gov. Information Model. River shoreline polygons were revised to reflect current conditions evident in 2012 aerial photography. River banks on opposite side of Wyandotte County were generally left alone, but were updated in a few areas. Also, excess river polygon areas extending beyond county boundaries were trimmed to conform to county limits.
Rationale: Keep dataset current.

Measure description: Aerial Orthophotography with horizontal accuracy meeting National Map Accuracy Standards was used as reference base layer to digitize vectors representing riverbanks (water edge). River shorelines as depicted often reflect water edge position and alignment (as visually interpretated by technician) at time of last aerial photo update-- but in locations with sharply defined, well elevated banks the bank edge was chosen as river edge delineation. Shorelines do not necessarily represent harbor line or high water mark, rather a snapshot of water level on photo date. River water levels can vary widely through the seasons. Defined river banks were preferred for shoreline delineation as opposed to sand flats that will submerge or emerge according to the season. In forested riparian zones river bank delineations were in some cases estimated.
