Road centerlines in Wyandotte County, as an ESRI GIS dataset in Kansas North State Plane, NAD83, units feet. Best cartographic rendering at map scale 1:6000 or smaller. Contains federal, state, county, and city roads, park drives, cemetery drives, plus private roads, ramps, service roads, alleys, and some private drives. Includes street name directional prefix, street name proper, and street type attribution, along with theoretical block address range information. Roads are depicted as a single line in center of pavement (not double-line, edge of pavement).
<langdata Sync="TRUE">en</langdata>
<supplinf>This dataset is available as a county wide file only.
Maintenance is ongoing, with file updates published every month or so. Also, GIS street name and address range grid annotation layers will be available upon special request.
STREET GRID EXPLANATION
As a general rule (exceptions exist), roads running north and south are referred to as type 'street', and roads running east and west are termed 'avenue'.
Generally (with exceptions in some jurisdictions), there is one street range baseline in Wyandotte County, dividing north/south-running numbered (e.g. N 24th St.) streets and their respective address ranges. (Note: The east/west-running street baseline is MO/KS state line, so technically all east/west-running streets are 'west', but they have no 'west (W)' direction descriptor in name (in KCK proper).The east-to-west baseline for numbered streets follows basically this alignment: State boundary line-to-Central Ave-to-Riverview Ave-to-county limits. Bonner Springs and Edwardsville use separate address grids in older portions of their downtown sections. Also, the Rosedale community of KCK uses its old address grid used before annexation with the city. In Rosedale, numbered streets run east-west, named streets run north-south.
Unified Government's GeoSpatial Services (GSS) is also custodian/distributor of many other digital spatial reference layer datasets covering Wyandotte County, Kansas. For more information on publicly available datasets contact GSS using Distributor contact info in this metadata.</supplinf>
<purpose>This dataset serves as a core reference layer in support of the Unified Government's Enterprise GIS (E-GIS). It is used for visualization, query, analysis, and address matching/geocoding of road network. It is also used by the Unified Government's CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) 9-1-1 system as geographic location aid, and is also shared with Kansas City area's Mid America Regional Council regional E9-1-1 emergency response system.</purpose>

<procdesc>Updates to centerlines occur through several methods:
1) When new aerial photography is available, it is examined for both known and as yet undiscovered road changes (new, reconfigured alignments, or removal). Using high resolution ortho aerial imagery, centerlines are digitized directly into an edit copy of road centerline dataset. This is performed at PC workstations in ArcGIS software using heads up digitizing with orthos providing features to be vectorized. Address range and street naming attribution is edited accordingly using available street range and street name source material (generally, those are existing maps on file and subdivision plats/info from Planning & Zoning Dept.)
2) If new aerial photography is not available, new street changes are edited in centerline dataset edit copy using rights-of-way delineations from plat or tax parcel GIS dataset as guides. If engineering plans are available, those may be used as reference sources too.</procdesc>

<attraccr>Accuracy of street name attributes and theoretical (absolute min and max address number range in a given street '100' block) address ranges have been checked and reviewed largely through repeated daily use, and are believed to be very accurate and complete.
From-to, left-right address range values are potential and theoretical (as noted above), not actual structure addresses.</attraccr>
</attracc>
<logic>Line feature topology present. All line segments intersect at nodes. Park, cemetery, and private drive segments do not intersect public street segments. Road segments at overpass/underpass, not-at-grade junctions intersect at nodes (this was done to encode roads with elevation information to indicate its 3D position, such as being above or below another road segment). Some duplicate, coincident street segments are intentionally included, for internal application reasons (alias street name situations). Coincident duplicate segment records for roads that are known by more than one name will each have a different, unique full street name (street prefix, street name proper, street suffix, as applicable).
Roads are represented by single lines regardless of outer turn lanes or parking lanes.
Unpaved rights-of-way ("paper streets") are not included.
Multi-lane roadways are represented by single lines. Divided highways (e.g. interstates) are usually depicted with 2 lines, one for each direction of travel. Some exceptions exist to this rule. For divided highways, address ranges on median side of segments are populated with 0s.
Segments are always address-range-numbered in ascending order from from-node to to-node.</logic>
<complete>Every public street, road, highway ramp in Wyandotte County included, but not all alleys. Also included are most private service roads and private roads. Some private driveways are in this dataset, depending mostly on whether they are significantly long (upwards of 200 feet or so), or otherwise provide accessibility to dwellings remotely located from the nearest public road.</complete>

<horizpar>Line segments represent center of pavement as visually interpreted from aerial photos. No positional accuracy studies have been conducted on this dataset. Overall, accuracy is in fair to good range, and adequate for many mapping applications. For cartographic rendering purposes, it is best used at scales 1:6000 or smaller, due to some generalized, rough-looking arc segments having infrequent vertices (and causing centerline misplacement in some cases).
This dataset does not purport to reflect true pavement centerlines, only an approximation thereof.</horizpar>

<overview>
<eaover>Full street name attribution present.
Theoretical address ranges for odd/even numbers present. Odd/even address range parity on segments, facing from low number to high number segment direction: on east-west roads, north side is even, south side is odd; on east-west roads, west side is even, east side is odd.
Segments with secondary street names will be duplicated, with one coincident line for each name.
Limited access routes, private drives, park drives, and cemetery drives ordinarily do not carry address ranges.</eaover>
