<abstract>Surface water bodies in Wyandotte County. A polygon feature dataset of natural lakes and ponds (ponds are considered small lakes) as well as reservoirs (artificial lakes such as stock ponds, real estate lakes, retention basins, and treatment lagoons). In ESRI GIS format in Kansas North State Plane NAD83, units feet, suitable for use at 1:2400 map scale or smaller. This dataset portrays all water bodies visible from aerial photography regardless of size in acres, excepting extremely small basins and ditches. No water elevation data is included. Water wells not included. Enclosed water reservoirs (tanks) not included.There are several ways to filter water poly features using the data schema. Field Water_Type uses the NHD data categories adopted by Esri Community Maps Local Government model. Field Water_Class classifies water bodies according to a somewhat arbitrary scheme of Pond or Lake (for purposes of this dataset the area size threshold for lake was &gt; 20 acres--therefore ponds are </abstract>
<purpose>To serve as a thematic hydrology reference layer in support of Unified Government's Enterprise GIS (E-GIS) system. It is used to display water bodies cartographically in GIS applications. Not intended for use in detailed site planning.</purpose>
<supplinf>This dataset is maintained in a hydrology ESRI geodatabase containing companion hydrology feature layers: streams (line features) and rivers (poly features) of Wyandotte County.
Unified Government's GeoSpatial Services (GSS) is also custodian/distributor of many other digital spatial reference layer datasets covering Wyandotte County, Kansas. For more information on publicly available datasets contact GSS using Distributor contact info in this metadata.</supplinf>

A polygon feature dataset of natural lakes and ponds (ponds are considered small lakes) as well as reservoirs (artificial lakes such as stock ponds, real estate lakes, retention basins, and treatment lagoons). In ESRI GIS format in Kansas North State Plane NAD83, units feet, suitable for use at 1:2400 map scale or smaller. This dataset portrays all water bodies visible from aerial photography regardless of size in acres, excepting extremely small basins and ditches. No water elevation data is included. Water wells not included. Enclosed water reservoirs (tanks) not included.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;There are several ways to filter water poly features using the data schema. Field Water_Type uses the NHD data categories adopted by Esri Community Maps Local Government model. Field Water_Class classifies water bodies according to a somewhat arbitrary scheme of Pond or Lake (for purposes of this dataset the area size threshold for lake was &amp;gt; 20 acres--therefore ponds are &amp;lt; 20 acres). There are a few exceptions to the water area class rule. Finally, the Name field contains name strings for a small number of county lakes that are known by name. These are generally the most prominent and well-known lakes and can be selected out accordingly.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>

<stepDesc>Dataset was reviewed against current (2012) aerial imagery to detect feature changes. Dataset was updated in several cases: if a lake or pond was dried up and non-acquatic vegetation was visible it was deleted, or if urban development had obliterated the water feature it was removed from the dataset.
New lakes or ponds of any significant size that was apparent in the imagery was digitized into dataset. Ponds or lakes that had significant changes in size and shape were redigitized. Features with only minor size or shape changes were left unaltered.
New fields were added: Water_Type, Waterarea, and Water_Class (and values were calculated to populate them).
A line smoothing process was applied to polygon features to cosmetically improve the appearance of lakes and ponds (eliminating unnatural-looking jagged and angular lines). The PAEK method was applied for smoothing, with a smoothing tolerance of 40 feet.
